Coal Companies and the External Costs of Coal

Coal companies must necessarily mine coal where they find it. This often results in people living near surface mines suffering a loss in their quality of life, and sometimes outright damage to property and health. Among these losses are sleep loss, higher cancer rates, contamination of drinking water, pervasive coal dust, structural damage to buildings, and even threats from coal miners. These damages or costs are not reflected in the price of coal and are called external costs by economists. These costs to people and society are not paid by the coal companies or their customers, but are paid by the victims. Respond to the question, " Should coal companies be required to compensate people who live near surface mines and suffer suffer property and health damage as a result?" Please post your one paragraph response with your name and class period.

    1. are you ready to pay higher utility bills as a result of your position? Coal prices would go up as a result of the compensation.

  2. I believe the people who live around the mines and affected by them should get compensated as well. These people lose more than others simply because of their surroundings. If the mine caused bad health problems for people they will need money for the unnecessary health bills. People's houses lose value because of this. The mines are basically taking these innocent peoples' money, and for lack of a better comparison, they are basically setting it on fire in a metaphorical way. This steals the money in my opinion which proves they should be compensated.

  4. Coal companies should compensate the people living in areas affected by coal mining. For the people who fall ill due to toxic water, their medical bills should be paid by the coal companies as well. House depreciation can not be made up but if the person does choose to sell their house the difference in price should be made up by the coal company. LAURA BISHOP 2ND MOD

Coal companies should absolutely be required to compensate those affected by both surface and underground mining. The coal companies have come into towns and destroyed property and health. Essentially they have stolen from these people. They are thieves, thieves of life, liberty, and property and should either make amends or be prosecuted accordingly.

A large issue is the pollution of streams by slag, waste material from the mining process. Dumping slag in a stream poisons the water, making it deadly and undrinkable. Should mining companies not be prosecuted the same as one who drops poison in a water reservoir?

Some towns have been covered by coal dust coming off mining sites, preventing citizens from enjoying their yards, burning outdoor fires, and even going outside. Deaths from cancer have increased so much more than the rest of the United States. Coal dust has even caused house values to depreciate, some by as much as 132,000 dollars.

Coal companies have ruined and taken lives with an eye solely for profit. They must compensate citizens affected by their mining, but they must also attempt to leave no trace with their mining. It's one thing to give money for a damaged house or lung, but no amount of money can replace a life.

  7. i think the mine companies should have to compensate people who lives near a surface mine, because before the mine companies was there they had good property. they didnt have to worry some much about thier health. The people now haves to live with alot of problems like dust and have not being able to sit outside of their own house, without have dust on thier stuff. so i think mine companies should be required to compensate to help the people lives they affect.-Susan Hood 2nd mod

  8. Coal companies should be required to compensate people who live near surface mines and suffer property and health damage as a result of their mining operations. Those health problems, such as cancer and loss of sleep, can be detrimental to their lives. There's no way that people living in a poor town can afford the cost of the medical bills they'll end up racking up due to the constant inhaling of coal dust that pollutes the air. If one's property value drops due to the coal dust from the surface mining that started after they had been there for a while can't be controlled by them, they shouldn't have to face the consequences of it. It's the least the coal companies can do to compensate them for their losses. ASHLEY MARCUM 2ND MOD

Yes they should. Coal companies shouldn't be aloud to damage peoples health and property without helping the people they're giving trouble to. Coal miners risk their lives for people that don't lift a finger to make money except to sign papers that allow them to mine even more. They're endangering the local people's health and they're not doing anything to help. Then need to pay to repair property damages caused by by their coal mining. The world is like alchemy. You can't take without giving something back in equal or more value. These coal mining companies aren't giving back. They're being unfair and cruel to people.

I think they should have to make an attempt to buy the land from the homeowners. If the homeowners refuse, then no i don't believe they should have to be paid back. Now, im not saying i aggree with coal mining, but it is the peoples decision. Yet, if they companies do not try to buy the land then yes i say they should pay the families a little bit of compensation for the damages done.

  11. The people should not be compensated they are at their own risk living where they live. It is their risk that they are taking being there. If they really wanted to move they would have and not put up with the disease and everything else. They just want a reason to complain so they stay there to wine and tell their tale of distress, when they can leave of their own free will...but alas they do not why you ask cause they want to have something to talk about. Yes they should be taken care of but they wouldnt need to be taken care of if they decided to pull up their big boy shorts and leave the place that is poisoning them!!!!!

  12. I believe these people should be compensated, as their entire life is effected by local mining around that area. Take Sylvester county for example, the living conditions there have severely deteriorated. Housing appraisals have dropped by over half, if not more. The coal dust alone leads to cancer or other illness, due to the emissions. While the cost of coal might rise due to this compensation, I believe it is well worth it to ensure both the safety and stability of those effected. -Doug Gaddy 4th Mod

Coal dust, and toxic slugde is ruining people's health issues. & yeah our umempolment rate is up, but there are plenty for jobs out there, coal is one but it's becoming dangerous to be around. They breathe in this coal dust, and take high chances of getting cancer lose sleep at night, and i think people should realize wv is a small state, and have small towns people here dont have much. Those people should be compensated for loss. (:

  15. Personally I don't think coal minning should be allowed near people's homes. This job should be done somewhere else! People are suffering due to disease's and sickness because of all the coal dust. The sad part is what about the children, it seems like as bad as it is affecting the neighborhoods I don't think I would want my child out playing! And that sucks having to stay in the house because of something stupid!I use to like the idea of coal minning and wanted to actually do it! But now that I actually see how much harm it's causeing, and what it's doing to these people...... I CHANGE MY MIND! I feel very bad for these people because they're getting killed and having to constantly clean silly things!!!!!! There's families that grew up to farming and now they cant even do that.

THey said it is distroying there home town and the history they have there. Most people that live near the coal company die of cancer. They should at least try to buy the land off of the people that live there because the longer they live there the more the thier property picee goes down because the coal dust.

People shouldnt have to move away, move themselves and their family and everything they know just to survive where they're happy. Yes, they do need to mine where they find coal, however, if that is the case they should pay back all of the people who have lost or been deprived of their everyday lives. 22. I believe that coal companies should pay the victims of coal mining, but the people who get paid back would force other people to pay a higher cost. Once this people got the cleaner air and better living conditions they would complain about the higher cost of electricty. In theory it is a good idea to compensate these people who are affected but they has yet to be a logical plan to complete this. There are ways to produce energy without coal and they could offer more jobs to the coal miners but this would come at a higher cost, and we are a cheap nation.

It is un healthy for the people to drink the water bacuse of all the nasty things that get into it people also have to change there filters alot more often because it get dirty alot faster, its not fair to the people because they are getting sick more often and having to pay more money to live in that area so i think if an area is pretty populated or house are to close by then they should not be aloud to mine there.

  34. : I think that coal companies should consider working away from inhabited places. Because they are destroying the environment and causing problems in towns with the coal slush and coal dust that’s going into the towns or houses near the living places. They should have a law that you will have to mine a certain distance away from where people live and from the water that people drink. The coal dust causes diseases and more illnesses that are affecting peoples life.

I do think coal campany's should be required to compensate those affected by surface mining, it should not even be permitted in areas where people live. It's very destrtuctive to the envirnment, and can cause a variety of health issues for the people who breath the coal dust on a daily basis. I'm not against coal mining at all, but I don't understand why they can't move to somewhere else, it would solve this whole "debate" on coal mining between the coal company's and the people in which are affected by the mning. Then, in my opnion, people would not have a right to complain about coal mining, considering it would not cause them any harm or damage to their property.

I don't think people should live near a coal mine because half the time you can drink the water because its dirty, you hear everything they do especially when they blow the ground up, and the air that the people have to breath isn't healthy either. One lady said she has to go to a community center just get water so she can cook, clean, and shower. That's not good. The coal miners should have their own little place where they can mine all they want to without harming anyone.

  39. Coal companies should definitely compensate the people who are affected by their mining. The people lived there first and should have all rights to live there without any problems. If mining coal in these areas affects a lot of the people in the area and causes damage to their quality of life, including health problems and environmental damage then they have the right to get money to pay for these issues. Either that or the coal companies should be forced to pay these people to move into a better area. - Justin Davis 4th

Coal companies should not be required to pay compensation to the people living around them. If there opinion to live there and take the risk. If anything people should relocate so gives them a safer environment and gives the coal company a bigger area to work.

  41. Coal companies should be responsible for external damages whether its health effects, or property damages. Home owners near coal mines should be offered two alternatives. The first being the coal companies offer to buy their home so they can move, or the second alternative is the coal companies provide a majority of the financial costs needed for health problems and/or property damages.

Coal companies should have to a pay a certain amount to the bystanders of the effects from their work. The people should not necessarily be held responsible to pay for the effects of coal mining. The coal company should pay more for effects that are more damaging or more expensive to the home owner such as subsidence.

  44. Coal companies should have to pay for the damage and the repairs to the neighbors of coal companies. They were living there first and the coal companies come in and mine the coal causing problems. Owners should not have to pay for damage done to their properties because at one time they already paid for it. Also, if health problems become an issue they should have to pay some, if not all, of the medical bill.

The mining companies are making a ton of money it wouldn't hurt them to spend a little bit to restore what they tore down. The coal company shouldn't be allowed to mine near towns or cities just for the fact it is killing our fellow people and destroying homes, and polluting the water we NEED to survive. Some might not be able to go to the store and buy gallons of fresh water for drinking and cleaning.

  48. Why I think they shouldn’t mine is because there is so much it does to the air and people. What it is doing is when they are mining the coal is it affects the coal miners by methane gas and black lung. The things that it is doing to other people is it can give people black lung if they live by the mines. When they are burning coal it goes into the air and people are breathing people like infants and older people.
